Mozilla, the company behind the web browser Firefox, is accusing Microsoft of discouraging users from changing default applications in Windows 10.

Microsoft's latest operating system, released this week, changed the way to set preferred applications for Internet browsing, calendar and other apps. Now a user has to work through more options and pages to make basic changes.

The move drove Mozilla CEO Chris Beard to pen an open letter to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, urging the company to respect user choice.

"It now takes more than twice the number of mouse clicks, scrolling through content and some technical sophistication for people to reassert the choices they had previously made in earlier versions of Windows," he said in the letter. "It's confusing, hard to navigate and easy to get lost."

Microsoft released a statement of its own, asserting that they give users ample chances to set their preferences.

"During the upgrade, consumers have the choice to set defaults, including for web browsing. Following the upgrade, they can easily choose the default browser of their choice,” the company told Mashable in an emailed statement.

But a Mozilla video tutorial underscores how much harder it is to change preferred apps.

In previous versions of Windows (and currently in Mac OS X), it asks if you want to set it as default the first time you use a browser different from the built-in one. All you have to do is click yes, and the change is made.

But now, if you click yes, you’re taken to a settings page where you’ll have to manually designate a different browser as default.

Microsoft has tremendous incentive to prevent users from using third party apps. The company's new Edge browser launched alongside Windows 10. The company also now leans on its own apps and services more than ever, going so far as putting them on competing platforms like iOS and Android too. If people don't use and depend on Microsoft services on Windows, they might leave for other apps or platforms.

Mozilla isn’t your usual tech company; it's a nonprofit which promotes free open-source programs on the web.

"Mozilla exists to bring choice, control and opportunity to everyone. We build Firefox and our other products for this reason," said Beard in the open letter.

As more and more PC users roll onto Microsoft’s latest OS offering, Windows 10, occasional slip ups within the operating system are bound to be pointed at. One such problem circling some in the massive user-base happens to be about dreaded broken Wi-Fi, but luckily there is a quick yet nerdy solution for fixing this issue in a jiffy! To explain the issue at hand in a bit more detail, the problem is surfacing on machines that were upgraded from Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10. Apparently if you had a old VPN client, specifically from Cisco, configured on your older Windows setup, Microsoft is certain that piece of software is what is causing the issue on Windows 10, and no amount of reboots or safe-mode investigations will fix the problem at hand.

How will you know if this is exactly what’s the issue on your PC? Well, if after the upgrade to Windows 10, no wireless networks are available to connect to even though wireless networks are available in range, and the Wi-Fi adapter underneath appears to be working with compatible drivers installed, if this is the case, reinstalling the driver or rebooting your PC won’t fix the problem.

As Microsoft puts it, “This issue may occur if older VPN software is installed on Windows 8.1 and is present during the upgrade to Windows 10. Older software versions contain a Filter Driver (the Deterministic Network Enhancer) which is not properly upgraded, leading to the issue.”

Fancy explanation aside, here’s how you can fix all that and get Wi-Fi working again in Windows 10:

Step 1: To begin, launch Command Prompt as Admin. To do this, simply right click the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.

Step 2: Enter the following command and hit the Enter key:

reg delete HKCR\CLSID\{988248f3-a1ad-49bf-9170-676cbbc36ba3} /va /f

Step 3: Now enter this command, and press Enter once more:

netcfg -v -u dni_dne

Preferably, you should restart your computer and check back with your Wi-Fi settings. All networks around you should now be visible and you should be able to connect to them easily.

We would like to take this moment to issue a word of caution for users running older versions of the Cisco VPN client or Sonic Global client. If you are running any one of these, and are planning on upgrading to Windows 10, you should uninstall them before proceeding.

Hopefully Microsoft will be issuing a more passionate warning in the next few days regarding this breakage before more users find themselves caught in this mess.

Step 2: Tap Edit and hit the Add button to enter a new repo. Add the following URL: https://anemonetheming.com/nightly/.

Step 3: Next, press Add Source and wait for Cydia to setup the new repo and reload.

Step 4: Once the new source has been added, search for Anemone in Cydia, and install it.

Step 5: Head back to the Sources section and add a second repo: http://antodev.yourepo.com/.

Step 6: Now search for Watch iOS theme and install it.

Step 7: After the theme is installed, exit Cydia and launch Anemone from your Home screen.

Step 8: Tap the Enable button located next to the Watch iOS theme visible in Anemone, and then hit Apply.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), on Tuesday terming the use of Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (Dect) 6.0 cordless phones illegal, announced to step up its efforts to eradicate the sale and use of this device.
Our technical team has found that the strong signals of Dect 6.0, interfere with the signals of mobile phone operators, that’s why we have banned the cordless in the country and sought law enforcing agency’s help in eliminating use of this particular device, said PTA official.
DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) is a digital wireless telephone technology, which has made cordless phones much more common in both businesses and homes. In Pakistan also, a large number of consumers are adopting this new technology due to its ease, voice quality and wide coverage area. Cost is another major factor, which has made this device popular; the consumers only pay the cheap cost of fixed line calls, while enjoying mobility and portability of an expensive mobile gadget.
We are not banning all cordless phones but only DECT 6.0 cordless phones, as they operate on the frequencies that cause service interference in the operations of authorised users of spectrum, who have paid us and we have no other way to ensure smooth functioning of cellular companies, except banning the devices, official said.
According to officials in order to stop the sale and use of devices, PTA Enforcement Division and its Zones in Karachi, Lahore, Muzaffarabad, Peshawar, Quetta and Rawalpindi have held several meetings with the officials of FIA, police, chambers of commerce, trade unions, importers, vendors and sellers of telecom equipments in their respective zones. The officials sought their help in apprehending the illegal importers, distributors, sellers and users of this device.
PTA also warns all the illegal importers, distributors, sellers and users of DECT 6.0 cordless phones, to refrain from such illegal activity otherwise legal action shall be taken against them through law enforcement agencies including FIA.
It is pertinent to mention that presently, telegraph act is the only legislation, on the basis of which PTA has initiated the drive. Can PTA deprive consumers from a worthy service on the basis of an old law, or under PTA act, a court of law can only interpret it.
There are still many questions, which need answers. While auctioning spectrums recently, does Pakistani IT ministry and PTA considered that Dect 6.0 phones could create hindrance, does PTA has required technical expertise to access and ban some futuristic technology and does the Federal Investigation Agency, which has mostly failed in the past to produce any tangible results, would be successful in eradicating use of these cordless phones in the country.was granted special powers to stop electricity and gas theft in 2013 but the percentage of power theft kept has been piling up every year.
